Carolina De Matthaeis is a skater who has been into art and photography since she was a teenager. Originally from Buenos Aires, Caro has travelled Europe (made the cover of DogDays #3) and now resides in Slovenia. She’s been turning her travels, skate trips and adventures into art for many years, creating her brand Persistir and zines like “QUAD roller skate zine” back in Argentina. Recently Caro is focusing on limited and very unique handmade art zines. The latest issue is called “Fortuito”. We dropped Caro some lines to learn more about her latest project (versión en español a continuación).

Caro, you have been making zines like the “QUAD roller skate zine” for a few years. Why do you like doing zines?

It’s a very nice tool that I discovered as a teenager and always kept in mind. Not only because I enjoy the processs of creating them, but also because it connects you with a world of underground culture, like going to fairs, meeting nice people and an infinite variety of productions, which are also connected with a circuit of underground music and many times also to the skate scene. Zines give you the opportunity of creating without editors, so you’ll find more true and sincere expressions, and all kind of points of view and backgrounds; such as feminist, LGBTIQQ+, POC etc. zines, and all of them made with their own personal aestethics, formats and resources. Zines are infinitly diverse and that’s the best of them. I’m happy that all this is still super alive even in this online era.

You went to art school and are using your skills to create unique roller skate art such as this art zine. It includes analog photos and hand drawings. Tell us more about the content.

This zine together with the first one of this kind wich I did last year, both are a window to simple people doing what they enjoy the most, in different moments and places that skating gifted me in the past years, showing pictures i took from my friends back home and the ones made on the road, many of them skating in places that they built. In the middle of the book there is a parenthesis with some pictures I took at my college and where I added the graphics and special stuff, and after this you continue with the normal ongoing of the book. In this part you find some graphics done in different techniques over different mediums, such as monotypes, lino and xilocuts etc. over papers and fabrics. Every copy includes some handmade ink drawings, not all of them skate related. Also, the covers are hand painted and the colors are connected with some of the pictures. I like the idea of making 1l1 copy zines, where even if the pictures are the same, each of them has unique features that makes them all different.

Why do you prefer analog photos over digital?

I like to take pictures with both, but there is maybe something special about analog photography. I think it’s just because that was my first big approach to photography, when i was 14 and my father gift me his analog camera. It’s a Konica Autoreflex TC that he bought when he was 18, with the money earned in the mandatory military service. I still have it and use it, some of these pictures were taken with it.

Which countries, spots and skaters can be found inside the zine “Fortuito”?

In order of appearance, you will find pictures of Deso’s place in ROG (ex Proper Skateparks headquarter) from 2018 and 2019, Slovenian great squat that had a beautiful and huge skatepark, a place that has been destroyed by the city in January 2020. It is a big loss for all who lived and enjoyed there. Then some street skate photo during a trip in Barcelona, with Chiqui @chiqu.i and Ailen @ak8ruedas in 2019, some from the south side of the city of Buenos Aires, a night skate session same year with Flor @florcristaldo and Bren @suy.u.u at their local DIY in Berazategui in the plaza La Paz @skatepaz. Then a skate contest at the El Playon DIY in Ciudad Evita, Buenos Aires, organized by the crew that built it. Followed by a day helping building the second part of the quarter at the “14 de Agosto” DIY in Quilmes in 2018, Buenos Aires. Some summer nights at St Marx DIY in Vienna from 2018. Then there is the parenthesis I mentioned followed by images from Vienna in 2018 with Irene @doom_skates, Mica @mica.castle, Sarah @harasananas, Chiddo @benedettabassi_photo and more. There are images from Pumpa DIY in Postojna, Slovenia, with the whole crew while building the cradle, and some from Ribnik in Slovenia, both from 2019. The final 6 pages are dedicated to my best friend Podri who died about three years ago. The last picture, the only color photo in the zine is a picture he took and I always liked a lot because of its colors and atmosphere.

Incluye fotos analógicas y dibujos a mano.
